What Is a Resignation Notice Period?

A resignation notice period is a statement in your employee contract which is designed to prevent you from leaving work unexpectedly and without notifying members of the management team. Its main purpose is to give your employer adequate time to find a suitable replacement so that there is not an employee or productivity shortfall.

For instance, you may want to leave immediately but your employee contact may stipulate that you must provide adequate notice – this is often one week if you have been at the company for more than 2 years but is dependent on the organization (i.e. it may be 2 weeks).

If the notice period is specified in your contract you must adhere to it or else risk a breach of contact which could result in loss of pay and legal proceedings against you.


Is It Possible to Resign Immediately?

There are cases where you are able to make an emergency resignation but this may only be done if your employer agrees to it. In cases of emergency resignation, it is best let your employer know before handing in your resignation letter and then to stipulate that you require an acknowledgment reply letter so that you have it in writing. This is just in case the employer decides not to honor the emergency resignation and beings legal proceedings whereas if you have a written reply this is evidence of acknowledgment.

In general, it is not recommended to ask for an immediate resignation unless it is a real emergency. Unexpected resignation can be extremely risky to the employee and for the employer, it makes an unexpectedly loss of personnel even more difficult to handle.


What Else Should You Consider Before Resigning?

Along with resignation letter notice periods there are some other factors that you may want to consider. These include finding alternative employment and being able to cope financially without a regular income stream for a period which could be a few months or longer.

Due to this, it is always a good idea to plan in advance of leaving so that you will not leave yourself exposed to adverse economic factors. Fortunately the good news is that the odds are in your favor – thousands of people resign every day and most of them find better employment within weeks.
