student with insomniaThe importance of a good night sleep is a both mental and physical. We generally find that we feel better and think better when we get a good night sleep. When we look at the data, about 5% of the population will have excess daytime sleep. And about 10% of the population will have insomnia. If we don’t get enough sleep for our job, then we are completely drained and we can’t function throughout the day.

We find ourselves nodding off in class and not paying attention. We will notice that we are not as fluid and energetic. There are a number of things that can end up causing people to have problems with insomnia. We see this change as they progress through life.

One very common problem with insomnia we see in teenagers and college kids is something called delayed sleep syndrome. Basically, this syndrome is where your internal clock has you wanting to go to bed late and get up late. People often complain that they can’t fall asleep at night or can’t wake up for class in the morning. Basically they are sleep state is delayed to a later phase in life.

That is the most common reason for young kids and college age students to have insomnia. It is hard not to stay up all night in order to study for intense exam. Often times college students get stressed out because of many homework assignments or impending deadlines. Often times such individuals cannot fall asleep. Often times stress and anxiety are very common causes of insomnia symptoms. Many people will complain about being unable to shut their brain off while lying in bed. They often realize that, if they keep thinking about this they are not going to sleep, so they try to think about peaceful things but they are right back thinking about stressful things.

For many people, the number one reason for insomnia is stress and thinking about things that occurred throughout their day or the future. If you need to see a sleep specialist or doctor for insomnia really depends on how frequent it happens or how much it is affecting you. If it is only a one night a week or an occasional thing that affects you seldom, you may be safe in taking something like Tylenol PM that is not needed on a regular basis. If you’re having problems with insomnia on a nightly basis it would be wise to see your doctor or a sleep specialist.
