Small Wooden Sailboat Plans + Time + Effort = Your Own Sailboat!

If you've dreamed about building your own sailboat you're not alone! Hundreds and thousands of people have had that same dream, the difference is some of them have actually fulfilled their dreams and built their own small sailboat. If you have some woodworking experience, the right sailboat plans and some determination you easily build your own small sailboat.

First of all, you really need to have some basic woodworking knowledge. If you've never done any kind of woodwork then I'm not going to say that you should try building a sailboat as your first project! If you're lacking experience then you should probably start looking for prefabricated sailboat kits and forget about working from a plan.

Assuming you've got some basic woodworking knowledge your going to need some plans. There aren't any specific small sailboat plans on the market  but you can get a set of DIY boat building plans that contain a heck of a lot of small sailboat designs, over 50 if I remember rightly.

It's good having quite a few designs to choose from as you're more likely to build a small sailboat that you will love and cherish for a long time. After all you're gonna be spending quite a bit of time and effort building it so it really should be your idea of a perfect sailboat!

Don't scrimp and save with the materials is my final piece of advice. If you're gonna take the time to build your own sailboat you should at least use the best materials you can afford. You'd be surprised just how many people try and get away with cheap materials.

If you've gone with the wooden boat plans I mentioned before, I think they actually have a list of materials needed. Once you've chosen your sailboat plan you can take the list down to your supplier and get them to price everything up. At least that way you won't be left with any wasted materials.
