    Jersey Sheets

how to choose jersey sheetsSheets made from jersey fabric are becoming more and more popular. At a time when there are a lot of these kinds of sheets being bought and sold, it would be nice to be able to say that all jersey sheets are created equal, but they aren’t. Some jersey sheets are better than others, and there are several reasons why this is so.

First, it helps to understand a bit about jersey. A soft material, it makes you wish you could keep yourself wrapped in it all the time. And when jersey is used to make clothing, that’s basically what you do: wrap yourself in jersey. Then, after wearing your clothes, you wash them. Whether you wash them in warm or cold water doesn’t matter; they will get clean. So you wash your jersey clothing in cold water, it holds its color, you get to wear the soft clothes again, and everything is fine.

It’s a little different when jersey is used for bedding. Sometimes, when washing bedding, warm water needs to be used. Jersey can fade in warm water. So you have to choose whether you will risk not getting your sheets as clean as you want, washing with cold water, or risk fading, and maybe even shrinking, them?

Fortunately, we live in a time when many laundry detergents are sold especially for cold water washing. These types of detergents get things very clean in cold water. So don’t fret. Just get cold water detergent, wash your jersey sheets in cold water, dry them on low, and enjoy.

Another issue which we might have to deal with when we go to buy jersey sheets is dye lots. In some full sets, the kind which include sheets and matching pillow covers, or comforters, sheets and pillow covers, the sheets might have been dyed in one dye lot, while the comforter and pillowcases were dyed in another dye lot. The result? A variation in color shading. Most of the higher quality sets should not have this problem, so either buy from a high-end shop, or be very observant when buying jersey sheet sets. After all, you want the whole set to match while you’re using it, and if they start out in different shades, they will end up looking even less alike than they started out.

So these “problems” aren’t very big problems at all. We just have to purchase decent quality and/or keep our eyes open as we buy, then wash with cold-water detergent, and jersey sheets will give us good service for a good, long time.
