    The Facts About Accounting and Bookkeeping

    book-keepingAccounting is known as the language of business. In fact, it has been popularly defined in that short tag. But what is accounting really? Accounting is a body of knowledge that utilizes skills to record, classify, summarize and interpret financial information about a company. It deals with transactions that have economic value. Information are transcribed in monetary terms and processed into reports that we call financial statements.

    These reports are needed by users in the making decisions about the business or enterprise. Such users include the owners, competitors, creditors, government, and others. The skills needed in accounting are delicate. They are acquired through thorough study of accountancy and all its principles. That is why the profession has been considered prestigious.

    Accounting is not the same as. Some people mistakenly believe that they refer to the same thing. That's roughly true since bookkeeping is a subset of accounting. It is one of its many fields. Bookkeeping focuses on the recording, classifying, and summarizing of transactions only. Bookkeepers perform clerical functions, which could be routinary and boring. Accounting, on the other hand, encompasses various fields and services such as audit, financial analysis, management advisory, taxation, and others.

    As an accountant, you are introduced to a lot of opportunities. Being a bookkeeper is a good start. It could be your stepping stone to career advancements in the future. While many young accountants start with audit, a bookkeeper position might actually lead you to good positions, especially within the company. Accounting managers, accounting systems supervisors, and other similar positions need to be familiar with the company's accounting system. This could mean promotion for you. So, I'll give you a piece of advice. Even if you are working as a bookkeeper doing routinary and boring functions every day, love your job. It is your training ground. Show your company how effective you are at your work. Your goal is to be considered an asset. But don't overdo it just because you want to get out of the bookkeeper position. Don't forget the first rule which is to love your job. If you are not patient enough, then a bookkeeper position might not be for you. But don't worry; as we've said earlier, there are many other fields in accounting.
